Deseret First Duel Rivalry Continues

Salt Lake City, UT, December 4, 2017 – The Deseret First Duel Rivalry between college rivals BYU and Utah picks up again in December with consecutive basketball games at BYU: Women’s Basketball on Saturday, December 9, at 2pm, and Men’s Basketball the following Saturday, December 16, at 9pm (yes, it does start at 9!).

How do the basketball rivalries stack up?  In the last five years, BYU Women’s Basketball won 3 games while Utah took 2 including last year’s game, 77-60.  Currently this season, BYU is 3-4 and Utah is 6-1.

After last year’s game cancellation, Men’s Basketball returns to the duel rivalry. In the last five encounters, BYU won 2 games while Utah won the last 3 in a row including the 2015 game, 83-75.  Currently this season, BYU is 6-2 and Utah is 6-1.

In the new year, the Utah Red Rocks will host the Cougars in Gymnastics on Friday, January 5, at 7pm.  The Red Rocks are 93-2 overall against BYU.  BYU beat Utah in 1994, then twenty years ago in 1998. But that doesn’t lessen the rivalry spirit at this historically packed and energized meet.

This season, after a tie in Soccer, Utah’s win in Football, and BYU’s win in Volleyball, the Duel Rivalry points stand at Utah 6.5 – 4.5 BYU.  To date, each school has won $1,500 in Duel Athletic Scholarships.

BYU and Utah have each won five times in the ten seasons of the Deseret First Duel.  With nine sports to go, who will break the tie in this eleventh season?  Follow the 2017-18 Deseret First Duel online.
